Ahaha, not at all: entirely my bad in that most medical advice goes in one ear and out of the other - my parents will certainly have told me variations on the above over the years, but there was just something about how the book lays it all out that clicks, in an ‘I can do that!’ way!
Isn’t it wonderful? I feel a little sleepy in the afternoon, but then am ALWAYS sleepy in the afternoon (particularly after a big lunch.) So don’t think it’s the fenofexadine.
A few years ago, my daughter (who has many seasonal pollen allergies, as well as ongoing allergies to cat hair, house dust and citrus oils) was being horrifically teenagery with massive mood swings. A chance conversation with a family friend who told us that loratidine made her irrationally angry all the time led us to swap her from that to cetirizine. And immediately she went from Teenager from Hell to normal (ha!) adolsecent ie moody but without the all-consuming rage.
Oh my god, it wasn’t just me! I’m so sorry to hear she and you went through that too - I remember trying to weigh up whether it’d be better to be incapacitated by the allergies, or full of rage (chose the former most of the time!) The side effects are truly mad :(
I’d cross continents to avoid the Grease-Fogg/ Haunted Pencil chap. Your garden sounds far more interesting than a party with a chance of accidentally mingling with edgelords, fascists et al.
Thank you for the French style tomato tart recipe! I made it for dinner tonight as I happened to have everything required - the only thing I did differently was added some goats cheese that needed finishing. It was delicious! 😊
THANK YOU for this! Have been holding hayfever at bay with Beconase, but you have to be ON IT! Am going to combine with drops to start with (I’ve given up on contact lenses!).
Am with you on the Substack Fete boycott until we know who is invited! I didn’t see awful JRM at Christmas!! Xxx
V proud that our baking made it into the newsletter. (Thanks to Mary Berry.) Your god-daughter did manage get chocolate on our duvet cover in the process (long story).
Your stand was noted!! (In a good way — I’m afraid I didn’t see it because I have barely been at my desk this week for various non lucrative reasons which is just great for my bank balance, but people were discussing it approvingly so well done you, worth missing out on cake for. No bad people noted but then I’m not good at faces so I could well have been showing pics of the dog to Benito Mussolini)
Interesting post! Not wanting to be alarmist, but I took Beconase for years because of chronic rhinitis & hayfever... I had cataract surgery in my mid 50's, and research suggests that inhaled nasal steroids can cause this. So just a word of caution...
Oooh, cripes! I’m very sorry to hear that. I don’t take Beconase as it never did much for me - the saline spray / Pollinosan which is non-steroidal do the job!
Ah! Yes! I take the brand name equivalent of it here (it’s also good for my truly bonkers reaction to bug bites). But I can’t say enough about a Neti pot. I used to only use it in the winter but it’s such a help during bad allergy seasons. I’m glad you’ve found something that works for you!
Jacob Rees Mogg makes my blood curdle. I shall encourage my daughter to heed your advice about hay fever, as a recent, later life sufferer. Her twin brother has luckily outgrown it, perhaps as well because he used to look like he’d gone 6 rounds with Mike Tyson. Now I’m shuddering thinking about Mike Tyson! Think I’ll focus on chocolate cake instead.
I did a double take, as if Count Dracula had just walked past me. I hope the tips help your daughter! Think the consistency is key, I’ve always been a ‘try something for a day’ kind of person & if it hasn’t worked, written it off!
Yes! For me it’s the eyes that are the worst. I am going to have to read the actual book aren’t I? Though presumably that isn’t a substitute for using the actual drops properly.
Interesting.... The only antihistamine I haven't tried from the list is fenofexadine, that will be my next port of call. Otherwise, sunglasses tick, nasal wash, (disgusting, but it helps), tick. I do think one gets resistant to Ash's after a while...
Rukmini, I am soooo pleased it worked for you!
You have now become like me - recommending the book to anyone who even mentions hay fever. I told you it is life changing!
It’s such simple advice but so effective - thank you so much!
And don’t be too harsh on your medic parents. I am a medic as well and I didn’t know about hay fever treatment until I read Sophie’s book!

Fenofexadine has changed my life!!!!!

It's transformational!

Aaah that is wonderful to hear! And the goats cheese sounds like a great shout!

Did you switch to a saline spray or continue to use Beconase?
I switched to a saline spray & Pollinosan - Beconase never worked for me!
thanks!

This made me laugh! And if I’d thought Wilf was in attendance I’d have jumped off my high horse pronto ❤️

Thank you so much for this - will be passing on the tip

Thank you thank you I must try the actually consistently taking the medicine thing rather than just buying it
I 100% think if it’s in my cupboard it’s the same as taking it 😂

Wonderful sounding recipe and I’ve already forwarded hay fever advice to 3 friends.
